Being that we are a hat portal, we receive many interesting inquiries, comments, stories, etc. with regards to hats. Here is an email from a man, a customer in fact who purchased a beret, who provides us with a little family (and American) history. By the way, Cavanagh, his family name, is in fact a famous American hat brand.
My family was in the hat manufacturing [sic] and selling 'hats'. My great-grandfather paid a hatter (Krofort and Knapp)$1.00 a week for his son to get the opportunity to apprentice to a "Hatter". Years later the 'Cavanagh Hat Store' opened at 245? Park Ave. N.Y, N.Y. He invented and patented a technique that allowed the hat (usually Fedoras-the hats that every man wore-every day-rich or poor-shod or bare-footed prior to the 1950's. Every black-and-white movie or newsreel demonstrates this amazing fact) enabling the wearer to 'fix' his hat every A.M. or hour, minute, etc. and yet retain its shape for a lifetime. You should know the name of the this famous (enough to set it apart and above all the other fine hats of the era. Most wearers and all 'true' hat-men' knew, by definition, the feature that made a "Cavanagh" the finest and most popular hat of the time. Do you know it? I'll bet you--do. The "Cav Edge" revolutionized fine men's headwear. The store was elegance itself. Customers rang Ed for custom work from General Macarthur’s (sic) to Cardinal Pacelli-before he became "Pius XII" - and everybody between them. Almost! In time "Dobbs", "Knox" and Cavangh worked under the same roof: ‘The Hat Corporation of America, Norwalk Connecticut. My grandfather (whom I do remember) was born in 1865-just before the Civil War ended. He became the corporation’s President and also Chairman of its Board of Directors - and here I am buying a beret-an affectation-as another prop for the one act play I call my name.
